I actually find myself wanting Serena to win (as to my shame I did with NoJo last night). Guess as an oldie, I and siding with the old guard.

If it's any consolation I was on Centre yesterday, actually didn't intend to watch Djokovic but due to the late start there wasn't much else of interest going on so I watched and also found myself rooting for Djokovic. I'm hopeful it's not a long term issue.

There must be some antidote to that.

I don't want Djoko to beat younger players, but that's a personal thing, nothing to do with politics, more a reflection of my own sporting career and getting sentimental over that feeling that you are on the way somewhere (until injury intervenes) but I do also understand that reluctance to retire, how hard it is to change a whole lifestyle based upon competition, how hard it is to let that go and become somebody else when that's been your whole life. It's not easy to do that.

For me that was a good outcome. A nice, competitive match, but Joint making it through. I hope she can finally get a bit of confidence flowing after such a horrible year.

Tbf, while I didn't see it, Serena has produced a very competitive scoreline against the top 100 20 yo ( top 40 last year ).

That's a heck of a lot more impressive than I was reading quite a number of folk suggesting might be the case.

Joint will play Eala in the 2nd  round a repeat of the 2025 Eastbourne  final.

So pleased that Maya won. I had to stop watching when she lost the second as I feared that Williams would win the third. Yes, Austin and McEnroe were awful but the other guy ( Nick Mullins?) was horrendous. I'm sure he described Willams as 'the finest athlete ever!' Is he blind or stupid? Williams only ever won by hitting the ball extremely hard and terrifying the opposition and line judges!

 Exactly

The crowd got a good match

I think telstar underestimates Serena's qualities - and Serena proved she's still got some

But the score was fair - Maya had to deal with her own demons - and slightly funny that Maya used to represent the US but switched because, supposedly, the federation didn't think she was worth supporting smile

I was never a great Serena fan, but c'mon re that last sentence !!!???  She won a heck of a lot of Slams by doing a bit more than that.

I think I am just showing my age as I was really sad that Stan the Man didn't win either. I was never a Serena or Nojo fan, so it's surprised me that I want them to have one last hurrah.
I do think that Serena could have won with adequate preparation, but no warm up tournaments... Well that says a lot. I wonder whether that'll be it now for the sisters or they'll have a proper swansong and officially retire gracefully as Stan has done.

So pleased for Katie. Think that moves her near the top 150

As PeteM said, currently showing as live ranked 170 with her R1 win points.

Just now go and beat Madison Keys or Kayla Day to get into WR 150 territory. That match has just gone one set all.

Presumably good enough for US Open Qualifying?

Swanny probably our most injury afflicted player so ironic to see her save British Tennis from total humilation.

Id certainly hope so, Katie has points to defend soon but is down to play in Portugal next week and likely will play in the US either in 125s or high ITFs before US Open qualifying. Top 200 pretty much assures her a quali spot

Has anybody noticed how many women have won a match in the main draw and qualifying draw? The total is 3. Katie S. has won 1 in the main draw, Heather 2 and Esther 1  in qualifying. Not sure what the total is for how many have failed to win a match in either draw.
