Really not great, Hollie

She was a break up, served for the set, but you could see her getting completely het up, and not only did she get broken then but she then got broken in her next game too

And ended up losing 5-7 when she was well in control

Stops moving her feet, slaps at the ball, all due to stress.....

Somebody had to say it, not smart tennis

By far the most shocking/worrying aspect of the last two days for me has been the total absence of any sort of grit. As soon as they went behind, or a little lead was brought back, that was it. No digging in, no hustle, no throwing everything at the opportunity and making the opponent really work. I watched two girls who I've never seen before and have no interest in seeing again as they basically gave up. Where were the kids up for a scrap?

Maybe they are just still a bit immature, or this is all still new. But come on, nowhere near good enough performances and attitudes (results in themselves disappointing but not necessarily an issue).

I agree with this. They looked lovely. They knew how to play-how to serve etc but they did not enjoy playing.

 Yes

Of the wins, I think Mark showed grit because he could easily have lost that match

And Liam's was not so much grit but belief in his style of play

And a couple of the others who lost (Vincent, say) had good fight

And I guess it would be unfair to say Tegan didn't

BUT you're right, some of them, some of the girls in particular, looked like they were at the dentists

It looked like a thoroughly disagreeable chore

As you say, why bother?

Having watched Ophelia Korpanec Davies lose yesterday, I'm not convinced she even likes tennis

Theyre kids. They blow hot and cold with sport. They all have dips and lose interest. A long as they come back around then thats fine. Pushy parent dont help but I am not in anyway suggesting this is the case here.

Var, it is not acceptable to 'blow cold' when you've been given a wildcard into your home Grand Slam

And, anyway, I don't think that's it

After all, you'd expect the other kids to look the same, then, wouldn't you?

And I dipped into a lot of other matches and it wasn't the case

And you should be asking the question about pushy parents, or LTA favourtism or whatever - it's a perfectly valid question

As people have noted, there was a real lack of fight, lack of willingness to engage, from some of the players

You simply can't make that many UEs, and just keep going, as though it doesn't matter - it should matter, this is Wimbledon, and if it doesn't, because you're 'blowing cold', then give it a miss this year

I saw Ophelia at Roehampton in April. She was hanging around waiting for Allegra having lost heavily to Alicia. She looked very fed-up (as you would after a 3 & 0 defeat) and bored and waiting to go home. Not interested in the other matches taking place.

Well in that case they ought to be doing something else. If I w the mother of a prospective tennis player I think I would have mixed feelings, given the amount of criticism and bad press they seem to get. Seems to some that British women and British girls cant do anything right at present. Even on here. Frustration I get but knocking them down surely isnt the way to help and support a young teen.

The young teens do need help and support but not pushed into something that they do not like. However as you say it is not that simple.
eg Ophelia comes from a family of siblings training for tennis and perhaps although she has had enough her parents do not see it as the others
enjoy it.

That's a decision that mothers (and fathers) obviously have to take

Some of thse players are receiving relatively large amounts of public money. The comments here are not personal, to their lives, their characters, their looks, or anything else

The comments here are purely about their tennis

And that is perfectly correct and proper

People are allowed to criticise - and when there are at least three or four posters above all criticising exactly the same thing then maybe they have a point? And maybe it might even do the players good to realise how other people perceive it?
