Given the vote closes this afternoon, it seems unlikely we will get a sudden influx of votes, although votes and comments are welcome.

Im not entirely sure what the vote told me! Although it seems on balance, there is a core group of maybe 20 / 25 people who really value it and more who take part when they can, which is what takes us to our regular votes in the mid 30s. As to what would get us back to votes in the 40s, that isnt clear to me, but this is what I took from the comments:

1) that people find the nominations threads surprisingly- to me- a valuable and interesting resource, more than I had realised and like that part of the process, maybe more appealing than the voting for many
2) keeping that together as one thread each month works best as it puts all comments and nominations in one place and makes it richer (my interpretation)
3) in terms of the vote one though thrown out was to hold separate mens and womens votes, although others commented they would prefer to maintain a single vote
4) it was suggested by a couple of people to leave the vote longer which may allow more people to vote in it
5) it was commented as to whether having its own section had actually led to a reduction in votes.

I am not sure if Ive missed any other ideas, but this is largely what I took from it.

Its great that the nominations process works for people; and its great that enough people like it to make it worth continuing.

For items 3 to 5 above, I will dwell on those more. Item 3 wont change this year, but between now and year end, Ill probably consult further to see what opinion generally is on that specific question.

Regarding its own section on the forum - my feeling is to leave it like that; enough people dont engage with the process that I dont want to bother them by throwing it into general and it feels like the curation process that the nominations and voting leads to is valuable enough to keep it separate

Leaving a vote up longer is easy to accomplish and it is trial and error really to see what works best. Ive left it 1 1/2 days or 2 days in the past, Indy did 2 1/2 days last month. Shorter votes were intended to make it more exciting, ie more vibrant, but going forwards I might play with vote durations and see what happens.

The main question to be considered separately seems to be men and women together in one vote or in separate votes. It will certainly remain for 2026 as it is, further consultation to come towards year end re 2027.

If anyone else got any further insight from this or still wants to comment , the vote closes this afternoon but comments will still be possible for as long as people wish to make them.

One of the great things about this forum is the respect given to all our players and the acknowledgement that our players are all at different stages in their tennis careers. The player of the month reflects the knowledge in depth of our players and the experience of the members to recognise players' achievements. It is this aspect that makes player of the month so fascinating. Occasionally it is about a player having a great run in a Grand Slam or a Masters where our praise is obvious and well-deserved, but more often we are rewarding the achievements of eg. a player stepping up a level to Challengers maybe, or a successful return from injury or a new career high after a period in the doldrums or consistency at a higher level when results perhaps before were rather sporadic.
This shows that we recognise the level of all our players, whether juniors, men, women, doubles, wheelchair and appreciate their different pathways.
I would be strongly against segregating the player of the month into separate sexes/disciplines for that reason.

 Thank you Canda - well written and argued. Being honest, it articulates much more clearly where my head has been at (is at) than I would or could do. I am and continue to be keen to hear all arguments though and will probably raise it for a specific discussion nearer the end of the season and before we start 2027.

2026 will carry on as is, rest easy on that!

From Helen40 - I believe Helen40 is referring to the log I maintain of which player wins PoM, to also add the reason they won?

Please feel free to move this post admin - I wanted to post it on the discussion about PoM but can't find it!

Anyway, want to say that something like this would be great for me but with having the addition a summary of why each player/pair won.

I posted this in another thread and wondered if anyone had any comments

2026 Player of the Season qualifiers list at the end of Wimbledon:

1. Neal Skupski - Australian Open Men's Doubles Champion and January PoM

2. Anna McBride - January PoM RU

3. Jack Pinnington-Jones - February PoM

4. Katie Boulter - February PoM RU

5. Toby Samuel - March PoM, May PoM, June PoM RU

6. Alicia Dudeney - March PoM RU

7. BJK Cup Team - April PoM

8. Daniella Britton - April PoM RU

9. Katie Swan - May PoM

10. Alfie Hewett/Gordon Reid - French Open and Wimbledon Wheelchair Mens Doubles Champions

11. Henry Searle - June PoM

12. Henry Patten - Wimbledon mens doubles champion

12 players now qualified for the Player of the Season vote for 2026 - Henry joins the party


I am thinking of potentially changing the qualifying criteria for the Player of the Season vote. Currently, there are the above 12 players qualified. Players can qualify by:

1) Winning or being Runner Up in the monthly PoM votes.

2) Winning one of the 15 grand slam titles (MS/WS/MD/WD/XD/JBS/JGS/JBD/JGD/WCMS/WCWS/WCQS/WCMD/WCWD/WCQD)

3) Being year end British number one in any of MS/WS/MD/WD/JB/JG/WCMS/WCWS/WCQS

4) Through the wildcard vote in December

So, the list above will be currently added to by winning at the USO, being top two in PoM for July to December, or through being one of the listed British number ones.

The one I am wondering about is the year end British number one qualifying. Do all 9 categories listed deserve a place or should the year end number one status be limited to , say, just the 4 senior categories ie mens and womens singles and doubles? Many of the number ones may qualify through PoM votes anyway, although Henry Patten is the only one qualified currently. Or should the year end number ones get entry into the wild card vote instead and I take out the automatic qualifying right to the main PoS and , instead, offer an additional wild card entry or two into the PoS vote itself

Just a thought, which wouldnt structurally change anything in terms of running the PoS vote itself. And it certainly won't have affected any of the votes to date as I suspect no one will have had this in mind

So, any thoughts on:

1) Direct entry or not into PoS vote for year end British number ones?

2) or maybe just some of the current categories?

3) automatic entry instead into the wild card vote?

4) one or two more entries through the wild card vote into PoS as a consequence?

Any comments welcomed!
