Do other people have their own personal lists of the greatest players of all time from Shropshire, Cheshire, Westmorland, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire etc etc?

Would be interested to compare and contrast if so. I think Roan Jones now sits atop the Shropshire list for me.

The Reverend John Hartley, twice Wimbledon champion in the 1870/80s says hello from his birthplace of Tong in Shropshire. Strangely I knew of him as he lived and died in Knaresborough just a mile or two from me!

Still a decent week for young Mr Jones.

You are quite right, and that is excellent knowledge. My apologies for not being clearer, my ranking lists are Open era only.

In the absence of any naysayers I will lock Roan in as all time Shropshire number one with Eve Langley now as number two.

PS I would love to have also said he wrote a book called Flyfishing per the Yellow Pages adverts some may remember, sadly he didn't (and the book didn't exist until later when, due to popular demand, it was brought out as an actual book!)

PPS my favourite ever advert was the Yellow Pages one - "hello, French polishers, it's just possible you could save my life" - brilliant!
