I have just updated my narrative for Hannah. All this late season success for out ladies is fantastic but it's playing havoc with my predictions!!!
Nominations:
1. Madeleine Brooks and Amelia Rajecki - winning the WTA125 doubles title in Jingshan, China. Millie's second title at this level and Madeleine's first. They are both climbing up the rankings towards the top 100 - live ranked 120=NCH and 116
2 Gordon Reid - after winning the French Riviera Open wheelchair mens doubles title in Nice, Gordon re-ascends to outright top spot in the world rankings, edging ahead of his partner and good friend, Alfie Hewett. Having won three of this seasons grand slam mens doubles titles, a well deserved accolade for Gordon. He backed it up by then taking the WC500 title, the Paratennis du Loiret, by beating Gustavo Fernandez in the final.
3 Cornelia Oosthuizen - aged 47, Cornelia becomes British number one in wheelchair women's singles for the first time (world ranking of 20) in the 5th October rankings release.
4: Sonay Kartal - for being the first British player to reach the final of a WTA 1000 since Jo Konta in 2019. With huge wins over Kalinina, Bencic , Paolini Svitolina and Ostapenko she reached the Wuhan final rising from a ranking of 170 to the top 50 . Her performance in outlasting world no 6 Svitolina ( who is enjoying her best ever year ) was especially impressive And she followed it up with a really gutsy 2 close tiebreak straight sets win over Ostapenko. In beating Paolini, Svitolina and Ostapenko she out fought 3 of the biggest fighters there are. She looked set to win the final too at a set and a break up but ultimately ran out of gas. All this after that 6 month injury absence. Phenomenal from Sonay.
5. Cameron Fryer & Kyle McKay - present and at least past of Stirling University, aged 21 & 20 respectively, with no ATP rankings in singles or doubles, the pair won the Redbridge M25 doubles title, beating the 2nd, 3rd & 4th seeds along the way. Kyle also came through qualifying and won his MD R1 to earn a singles ranking. The following week the lads were RU in the Sheffield M25 doubles, thus in 2 weeks taking them each from unranked to inside the top 1000.
6. Ella McDonald - won both the singles and doubles ( with Kyle Collins, USA ) titles at the Austin, TX W50, the singles from qualifying and beating Madison Brengle WR 192 in the final. In her first tournament this month Ella reached the Templeton, CA W100 singles SF also from qualifying, and she finished the month by beating Elvina Kalieva WR111 ( already well on top before a retirement in set 2 ) in the New Braunfels, TX W100 R1. Her singles ranking has risen from WR 423 at the start of the month to a CH live ranked 316 and GB #9.
7. Hannah Klugman won the WTT 100 tournament in Wrexham, beating 3 experienced top 200 players (Siskova, Sramkova and Jaquemot) as well as our own Jodie Burrage en route to the title. She showed great composure and maturity and didn't drop a set all week. She then had good run to the semi-final in Glasgow before finally running out of steam. She became the youngest GB woman to win a title at W100 level and will achieve a new CH of 234 in the 02/11 rankings.
8. Oliver Tarvet - back to back British M25 singles titles, losing just two sets en route and taking him to what will be a new career high ranking around 250 as a result. Over the month, including action in a challenger 100 qualies and main draw, he amassed a 13-1 win/loss record.
