Weeks 41 - WTA1000 - Wuhan, China - Hard

It looked as if Sonay had the match for the taking at a set and 2-0 up but her opponent upped her game. I have never seen another player play the drop shot lob combination as well as Maja. After losing point after point to them Sonay finally got into the drop shot earlier and responded with winners. It's a pity Sonay couldn't quite manage to take the title but she has had an incredible week, especially considering how soon it was after being out for 6 months. Sonay has clearly raised her level from the previous time she played before her time out.

On Monday, Sonay will climb to 50th in the world rankings - just below her career high - and become the British number one for the first time.

Well done SK.

Didn't manage to see it today. Real pity but yes a great week so soon after her 6 months out.

Not sure that she's clearly upped her level from what she waa producing at Indian Wells prior to her injury, that was getting pretty close to elite level then. But this super run here, some players feeling a long season or not, has so soon been such reaffirmation of what some were beginning to feel back then. Go, Sonay.

Second that Indy. She has said in interviews this week she was getting back to her form in Indian Wells, but was surprised how quickly she had managed to find her game again after her six month lay off. So still more to come from Sonay moving forward.

Really enjoyed the final though not the result we all hoped for. So refreshing to see a woman's match of decent quality without a load of high volume screeching and with a great deal of variety.
Two decent players who put on a good show.

Sonay has been fantastic on returning after injury and is back to her pre injury level if not a bit better. I think she ran out of steam a bit today but though disappointed I'm sure if you had told her at the start of the tournament she would make the final she would not have believed you.

Watched the match and both players deserved to win - it was a pleasure to watch. I do think that Sonay started to run out of steam after playing like a dream for a set. Even though Sonay was a game point away from 3-0 in set 2, in reality there was nothing in it from the start of that set and little by little, Majas variety, moon balls, drop/lob combos and sheer will started to turn the match around. I think both players were feeling it physically, but Sonay looked the more exhausted from the middle of set 2 and took some pills at one point from the on court doctor.

Overall, however, a sensational week with some outstanding victories (both women TBF) and both players can be very proud of their levels and the outcome of the tournament. One for the nice people who have to grind out match wins without the easy power of some of their more famous opponents.
