Week 41 - WTA125 - Lisbon, Portugal - Clay

Clearly mathematically Fran could be GB #1 before year end.. Fran has no ranking counters to defend before January, Katie has very little.

It will be very interesting how our top 5 go in the new year. Fit and well, I 'd say Emma and Sonay are our top 2. But Emma is not playing just now and Sonay, although getting back in the groove very quickly, is still making up for lost time rankingswise,

 Go, Hannah ! biggrin

(And/or Mika smile)

And Katie S and Alicia

I may moan about the depth with our GB women. But if everything ( or OK, more realistically, most things ) went fairly well, we could actually have our strongest top 10 in many a year.

And I'd guess most folk will be rather more interested in top 100 / 200 Brits than what the depth further down looks like.

Matilda Jorge has just lost a TB to go into a 3rd set vs (7) Dalma Galfi, holding up the big sister vs Fran match.

Fran is a set up but it's been trading breaks in the second set so far. She is getting a little rattled having been called for a foot fault on a couple of occasions on the same line i think

And with that win Fran is assured a place back inside the top 100 when the rankings are updated

Hmm, not sure about that - there are at least three players that can still catch her if she doesn't win and they win their QF's. Currently live ranked 97 though. But if not this week she should make it in Brazil next week.

She's certainly in prime position, showing as live ranked 97.

4 players could actually overtake her mark by winning their upcoming QF matches ( 2 WTA 125 top seeds, a WTA 125 3rd seed, plus Sonay! ). Plus a WTA 125 5th seed if she reached her WTA 125 final in Italy.

Just keep winning Fran. And Sonay.

Ah, I'm not the only annoying bearer of news.

On LTR, there are 6 players who are left in various events who could catch and overtake Fran, including Sonay. I am sure having 4 of them actually achieve it and Fran go no further is a stretch but she can certainly, in theory, be overtaken by enough players to not make the top 100.

Best thing to do is win another match or two!

And Sonay to also win another one!

 Ha, and me also!

I made it 6?

Maneiro in Lisbon

Ferro in Lisbon (haven't checked, are these two perhaps playing each other?)

Grabher in Mallorca

Stefanini in Rovereto

Kartal in Wuhan

And there is a Kalieva showing in Edmund, although maybe that is a mistake?

Anyway, same point as you both!

Yep, it's 6. I'd missed Jon's 3rd seed Kalieva in the Edmond W100. She has actually still to complete her R1 match but could overtake Fran if she went and won the title. All 6 can do it independently of each other ( Maneiro doesn't meet Ferro in the Lisbon QFs )

Fran has a one-point counter from Nottingham plus four 15 point counters from 125's - so plenty of scope for adding points.
