I'm quite surprised at this result, I thought that Josh would win in 3 sets. James definately seems to like India, with plenty of good memories from Mumbai !! He's the first British winner of the new season

Apart from the tiebreaks, Josh seemed to be the one in control for most of the match. Aucks only got to deuce once on the Goodall serve and never had a break point. In
contrast, Josh was regularly pressurizing the Auckland serve and had plenty of half chances and 7 break points. However, each time James came up with the big serves and just played the big points better in the end.

Full match stats:

James hit 16 aces, served at 59%, won 83% of first serve pts and 57% of 2nd serve ones. He saved 7/7 bps faced.

Josh hit 14 aces, served at 64%, won 78% of 1st serve pts and 69% of 2nd serve ones. He didn't face a bp.

Next up for James will be either Jean-Claude Scherrer or 7th seed Michael Berrer. Scherrer would be preferable. The match has just got underway and Scherrer is an break up early in the first set.

Does anyone know if rd2 qualies will be played today or tomorrow ? Arka, what's the time in India at the moment ?

Thanks for the scoring USM and Bladetiger. I hadn't realised these matches would have livescoring, I might have got up if I'd known!

Shame that Jonny and Josh lost but well done to James, hopefully he can go on a qualify.

Emphasizing the "might" there It's a well-known fact that Bethan and her bed are inseparable in the early hours apart from exceptional circumstances like Brits in ATP finals

Suprising result, augurs well for James, tho' I Suspect that if Josh had lost to someone ranked 390 who wasnt British we'd have been shocked by his performance.

Like you say USM sounds like James just played the big points better to dig himself out of trouble.

Either Berrer or Scherrer will be very tough and Aucks will be 2nd favourite but lets hope his Indian love affair continues tomorrow.

2nd round will be tomorrow I am pretty sure, it's 20 to 5 now in Chennai.

I wouldn't have thought we'd have been shocked if he'd lost to a non-Brit ranked 390 as judging from the scoreboard he played pretty well. Just disappointed probably as he didn't play well enough on the big points and the section he's in is a good one.

Bladetiger, how well do you think Aucks' game will match up against Berrer if they meet in rd2 ?

Berrer-Scherrer is currently very close: 5-5 in the 1st

I make no attempt to hide the fact. ATP finals (or any televised matches) and F1 Grand Prixs are the ony things that will get me out of bed early!

Berrer won 76(7) 62 so that's who's up next for Aucks.

I think he has a good chance, hopefully I'm proven right!

Is it easier to get you into bed or out?
